What are iron on patches?
An iron on patch has a layer of heat-activated adhesive on the back. When you press the patch with heat, the adhesive melts into the fabric and bonds as it cools. Emboro Stitch is a US-based patch company with our own production houses in Karachi and Sialkot, Pakistan, so you deal directly with the team that makes your patches.
Iron on patches are real patches, not prints. An embroidered patch is classic thread on twill with a merrow border. A woven patch uses thin, tightly woven thread for fine text and detail. Both can be made with iron-on backing.

Iron-on vs sew-on vs Velcro backing
Iron-on and sew-on backing are both included in the price. Velcro (hook and loop) and other backings are add-ons. Pick the backing that fits the fabric and how often the item is washed.

| Backing | Price | How it attaches | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron-on | Included in the price | Heat-activated adhesive, pressed on with an iron or heat press | Cotton, denim and canvas |
| Sew-on | Included in the price | Stitched around the edge | Items that are washed often, or fabrics that cannot take heat |
| Velcro, hook side only | +$0.25 per piece | Hook patch sticks to a loop surface | Gear and uniforms where patches change |
| Velcro, hook + loop | +$0.46 per piece | Hook patch and a matching loop piece | Gear and uniforms where patches change |
| Adhesive / peel-and-stick | +$0.29 per piece | Sticky backing, no heat needed | Quick placement on smooth surfaces |
Many buyers choose iron-on backing and add a few stitches around the edge for items that go through the wash often. Your quote shows the cost of every backing before you pay.
Which fabrics work with iron on patches
Heat does the work, so the fabric matters. Smooth, heat-safe fabrics work well with iron on patches.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Fabric | Iron-on works? | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton, denim and canvas | Yes | Use the cotton setting on your iron. |
| Hats and caps | Yes, with the right tool | A heat press made for caps gives an even bond on a curved surface. |
| Polyester and blends | With care | Use lower heat and a press cloth. Test a small area first. |
| Fleece and hoodies | With care | Keep the heat moderate, use a press cloth and press a little longer. |
| Nylon, leather and velvet | Not recommended | Heat can damage these fabrics. Choose sew-on backing instead. |
Sew-on backing is included in the price too, so you can order sew-on for any fabric that cannot take heat.

How to apply iron on patches
You need a household iron or a heat press, a thin press cloth and a hard, flat surface. These steps work for most cotton and denim items.
- Wash and dry the item first. Skip fabric softener.
- Set your iron to the cotton setting with the steam turned off. Let it heat fully.
- Place the patch where you want it, with the adhesive side down.
- Cover the patch with a thin cloth or parchment paper.
- Press down firmly for about 30 seconds. Do not slide the iron.
- Turn the item inside out and press from the back for about 30 seconds.
- Let the item cool flat before you touch the edges.
- For items that are washed often, add a few stitches around the edge.
With a heat press, follow the same order and use firm, even pressure. To help the patch last, wash the item inside out in cool water and let it air dry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are iron on patches permanent?
Iron on patches hold well on cotton, denim and canvas when you apply them with enough heat and pressure. No heat-applied patch lasts forever, and heavy washing can loosen the adhesive over time. For items that go in the wash often, add a few stitches around the edge.
Can I order just 10 iron on patches?
Yes. Orders start at just 10 pieces per design. The price per piece drops at 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1,000 pieces.
Is iron-on backing included in the price?
Yes. Iron-on backing and sew-on backing are both included in the price. Velcro (hook and loop) and other backings are add-ons, and your quote shows the cost.
How long do I iron on a patch?
Most cotton and denim items need about 30 seconds of firm pressure on the front, then about 30 seconds from the back. Use a thin press cloth, do not slide the iron and let the item cool flat before you touch the edges.
Can I use iron on patches on polyester, nylon or leather?
Polyester can work with lower heat, a press cloth and a test on a small area first. Nylon, leather and velvet can be damaged by heat, so sew-on backing is the safer choice for those fabrics.
What is the difference between iron-on and sew-on patches?
An iron-on patch has heat-activated adhesive on the back. A sew-on patch is stitched to the fabric. Both are included in the price, so you can pick the one that suits your fabric and how often the item is washed.
Can I see my iron on patch before you make it?
Yes. Every patch order includes a Free Digital Mockup Before Production. It shows size, colors, backing and border. Production starts only after you approve it.
How long does production take?
Standard production is 7–14 business days after you approve your mockup. Rush production is 3–5 business days, and a rush fee applies. Shipping is charged separately and shown on your quote.
