What makes PVC patches different?

PVC patches are made from soft, flexible rubber (polyvinyl chloride) that is molded into your design using a custom die. The result is a patch with raised and recessed layers that create a clean 3D effect you can see and feel.

Unlike embroidered patches (which use thread on fabric), PVC patches have no stitching at all. The design is molded directly into the rubber, which means fine lines, small text, and sharp edges come out perfectly every time. There is no thread to fray, no fabric to fade, and no stitching to come undone.

PVC is completely waterproof. It does not absorb moisture, does not stain, and cleans with a wipe. That makes it the go-to choice for tactical gear, outdoor equipment, military units, and brands that need patches to survive real-world conditions.

If your patches will see rain, sweat, mud, or heavy use, PVC is the right choice.

Comparison

PVC patches vs other patch types

Not sure embroidered is the right fit? Here is how it stacks up against every alternative — honestly.

PVC vs Embroidered

PVC vs Embroidered

PVC is molded rubber with a smooth, waterproof surface. Embroidered is thread on fabric with a raised textile texture. PVC holds sharp detail on fine lines and small text better than embroidery. Embroidered gives the traditional, classic look. Choose PVC for tactical, outdoor, and modern branding. Choose embroidered for classic uniforms and traditional patches.

PVC vs Woven

PVC vs Woven

PVC is rubber, woven is fine thread on fabric. Both handle small detail well, but PVC is waterproof and more durable in harsh conditions. Woven is lighter and more flexible for garment applications. Choose PVC for gear and outdoor use. Choose woven for fashion and lightweight clothing.

PVC vs Silicone

PVC vs Silicone

Both are rubber-like, but PVC is firmer and holds sharp 3D detail better. Silicone is softer and more flexible, often used for labels on athletic and stretch fabrics. Choose PVC for patches with crisp edges and bold layering. Choose silicone for soft-touch labels on performance wear.

PVC vs Leather

PVC vs Leather

PVC is synthetic and waterproof. Leather is natural or faux with a premium organic feel. PVC is better for outdoor and tactical applications. Leather is better for fashion branding on hats, bags, and premium apparel. Choose based on the end use and the brand aesthetic you want to project.

FAQ

Common questions about PVC patches

Straight answers to everything people ask before placing an order.

How durable are PVC patches?

Extremely durable. PVC does not fade, fray, crack, or absorb moisture. It handles UV exposure, extreme temperatures, and physical impact better than any fabric-based patch type.

Are PVC patches waterproof?

Yes, completely. PVC does not absorb water at all. Rain, sweat, mud, snow. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

What is 2D vs 3D in PVC patches?

2D means flat surface with recessed line detail. 3D means multiple raised and recessed layers creating visible depth. Most patches use a combination of both, called "2D with 3D elements."

Can you do glow-in-the-dark PVC?

Yes. Glow-in-the-dark PVC absorbs light during the day and glows in low-light conditions. Popular for morale patches, safety patches, and tactical identification.

Why is PVC production slower than embroidered?

PVC patches require a custom metal mold to be created for your specific design before production begins. This mold creation adds a few days to the timeline. Once the mold exists, reorders are faster.

Can I get PVC patches with Velcro backing?

Yes. Velcro (hook and loop) is the most popular backing for PVC patches. We include both the hook side on the patch and a matching loop piece you can sew onto your gear.

Are PVC patches heavy?

Slightly heavier than fabric patches, but not noticeably so for standard sizes. A 3-inch PVC patch weighs roughly 15 to 20 grams.

What is the minimum order?

50 pieces for standard PVC patches.

How long does production take?

10 to 18 days from proof approval (includes mold creation). Rush options available. Reorders skip the mold step and ship faster.
